Description

Dracaena (Dracaena reflexa) ‘Song of Jamaica’ is a sturdy, versatile plant that can grow in both a light and a bright spot.

Song of Jamaica has lovely, elegant, narrow leaves in a dark green with a pretty pale green stripe down the center.

The Dracaena, also known as the Dragon Tree, is a plant from Africa, giving it a rough appearance and it is a plant that you can easily take care of.

In the living room the plants can grow into large bushes and in nature they even grow into trees.

For this reason and because of the fact that this plant is very air-purifying, compact size and robustness makes the Dracaena compacta a decent houseplant choice in offices and other business premises.

The plant stands about 12 inches in height. Its leaves grow close to the stock and give it a corn plant appearance.

Temperature :

Prefers warm indoor conditions between 18–26°C. Protect from drafts and keep above 12°C.

Lighting preference :

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can adapt to medium light but avoid direct sunlight, which may scorch its striped leaves.

 Irrigation of water :

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.

 Humidity :

Appreciates moderate humidity. Occasional misting helps keep the foliage healthy.

Fertilization and feeding :

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Stop feeding in winter.

 Flowering :

Rare indoors, primarily grown for its lush green foliage with lime-yellow streaks.

 Soil :

Requires a well-draining mix. A peat-based potting soil with perlite works best.

 Toxicity :

Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Can cause vomiting, drooling, or loss of appetite.

 Pot Size :

Choose a stable pot with good drainage. Repot every 2–3 years or when roots fill the container.

Pruning :

Trim yellow or damaged leaves. Can cut back stems to control height and encourage new shoots.

 Diseases :

Prone to root rot if overwatered. May also be affected by spider mites, scale, or mealybugs.
