Product Description

Description

Description

Dieffenbachia is originally from the tropical rain forests South and Central America such as Brazil, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Named as a tribute to the Vienna Botanist Joseph Dieffenbach

It is used as a decorative outdoor plant in (sub-) tropical regions of the world and can reach a height of 2 metres in those areas.

In temperate climes, the Dieffenbachia Sequins makes a wonderful and popular houseplant.

———–

Temperature :

Grows best in 18–26°C. Protect from drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Lighting preference :

Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium shade, but avoid strong direct sunlight that may scorch the leaves.

 Irrigation of water :

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in winter.

 Humidity :

Likes moderate to high humidity. Mist leaves regularly or place near a humidifier to keep foliage healthy.

Fertilization and feeding :

Feed once every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. Stop feeding during winter dormancy.

 Flowering :

Occasionally may produce white, spathe-like flowers indoors, though it’s mainly admired for its compact, patterned leaves.

 Soil :

Prefers rich, well-draining soil. A peat-based mix with perlite or sand works well.

 Toxicity :

Highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Can cause mouth irritation, swelling, or stomach upset.

 Pot Size :

Ideal for medium-sized pots with drainage. Repot every 2–3 years as roots fill the pot.

Pruning :

Remove yellow or damaged leaves. Trim stems if needed to control size and encourage fresh growth.

 Diseases :

Susceptible to root rot from overwatering. May also attract spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs.

 Air Purification :

Effective air purifier, helping to reduce toxins and improve indoor air quality.

Extra tips

• As the plant generally grows towards the light, it is a good idea to give it a quarter turn every month – standing it, pot and all, on a wheeled base makes this easier of course.

• Dieffenbachia sequins will appreciate being stood outdoors on a warm but rainy day. It will really perk up after a shower.

• As in its natural habitat, it will regularly lose its lower leaves – do not worry if they turn yellow and drop off, as long as it continues to make new ones.

With these tips, you can keep your dieffenbachia healthy and looking fresh for a long time.
