Product Description

Dieffenbachia is originally from the tropical rain forests South and Central America such as Brazil, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Named as a tribute to the Vienna Botanist Joseph Dieffenbach

It is used as a decorative outdoor plant in (sub-) tropical regions of the world and can reach a height of 2 metres in those areas.

In temperate climes, the Dieffenbachia Sequins makes a wonderful and popular houseplant.

———–

Temperature :

Thrives in average household temperatures between 18–26°C. Keep away from drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Lighting preference :

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its variegation. Can tolerate medium shade but avoid harsh direct sunlight.

 Irrigation of water :

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering during winter.

 Humidity :

Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier to prevent leaf edges from browning.

Fertilization and feeding :

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.

 Flowering :

Occasionally produces white, spathe-like flowers indoors, but it’s mainly valued for its bold, patterned foliage.

 Soil :

Prefers a rich, well-draining mix. A peat-based soil with perlite or sand is ideal.

 Toxicity :

Highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Can cause mouth irritation, swelling, and stomach upset. Handle with care.

 Pot Size :

Grows well in medium to large pots with drainage. Repot every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the container.

Pruning :

Remove yellow or damaged leaves. Can cut back tall stems to control height and encourage new shoots.

 Diseases :

Prone to root rot if overwatered. May also attract spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs.

 Air Purification :

Good air purifier, known for filtering common indoor toxins and improving air quality.

Extra tips

• As the plant generally grows towards the light, it is a good idea to give it a quarter turn every month – standing it, pot and all, on a wheeled base makes this easier of course.

• Dieffenbachia sequins will appreciate being stood outdoors on a warm but rainy day. It will really perk up after a shower.

• As in its natural habitat, it will regularly lose its lower leaves – do not worry if they turn yellow and drop off, as long as it continues to make new ones.

With these tips, you can keep your dieffenbachia healthy and looking fresh for a long time.
