زهرة السجاد أو زهرة الغمد او زهرة الكاليوس  كلها نفس الأسماء لنبات  صيفي واحد. منها حولية ومنها مستديم الخضرة ، النبات سريع وسهل النمو ، ولكن ضع في اعتبارك انه يجب ان لا تقل درجة الحرارة في فصل الشتاءً عن 10 درجات مئوية ، فهي نبتة محبة للدفء والرطوبة ، لذا ننصح برشها برذاذ الماء ما بين فترة وفترة .

تعتبر لوحة فنية من الالوان الطبيعية وقمة في الجمال والإبداع وتتميز نبتة السجاد بألوانها الرائعة والمختلطة ، وتنمو أوراقها وهي متعددة الالوان فتتكون الورقة في بعض الأنواع من لون واحد أو لونين ، وبعض الأنواع الورقة بها أكثر من ثلاثة ألوان ، وتتألف الألوان من خليط من الأخضر ، الأصفر ، الأحمر والزهري ، مما يعطي منظراً رائعاً وجميلاً للحدائق والمنازل ، والأوراق بطبيعتها مبرقشة مشرشرة الحواف ، وأزهارها بيضاء اللون وقد تكون زهرية . وتعتبر من أجمل نباتات الزينة الداخلية ، وسميت بالسجاد لنقوشها والوانها الكثيرة والمختلفة الشبيهة بالسجاد .

تنتج في قمة النبتة سنبلة زهرية يُنصح بإزالتها كي لا تنافس الأوراق على الماء والعناصر الموجودة بالتربة ،

البئية الضوئية المناسبة للنبتة هي الأماكن المضيئة الساطعة ، مما يعني أننا يمكن أن نربيها داخل المنازل أو خارجها ،

التكاثر : يتكاثر نبات السجاد بطريقتين أساسيتين

• عن طريق زراعة البذور مباشرة : وهنا لا بد ان تكون البذور صغيرة و يجب استنباتها أولا قبل أسابيع من الزراعة في اصيصات خارجيه

والاستنبات يأخذ من أسبوع الى أسبوعين في درجة حرارة 21 – 29 درجة مئوية

ولا يجب تغطيه البذور. وقد يكون من المفيد وضع القدر في كيس من البلاستيك للحفاظ على الرطوبة للبذور ، بعد ذلك يتم اخذ النبات النابت ووضعه في التربة الخارجية للحديقة

• الانبات بواسطة العقل : و يتم ذلك بالعقلة الطرفية في الربيع والخريف وكما يمكن وضع العقل في الماء الى ان تتكون لها الجذور ثم تغرس في البيتموس مباشرة

نوعية التربة : تربة جيدة الصرف .

التسميد : يحتاج الى التسميد بالأسمدة النيتروجينية مرة كل شهر خلال الربيع والصيف لزيادة نموه الخضري مع ضرورة قص الأفرع بعد أن يبلغ طول النبات 15 سم وذلك بهدف تشجيع النمو الجانبي وإعطاء إنتاجية جيدة .

الريّ : منتظم ويراعى عدم اغراق التربة ويكون الريّ غزيراً نسبياً في الصيف و يقلل في الشتاء.

لا يّرش الماء على أوراق النبات لأنها أوراق وبرة تموت عند رش الماء عليها. يجب الحفاظ على التربة رطبه مع ري النبات باستمرار

التعرض للضوء : تحتاج لأشعة ضوء قوية بعيدة عن الشمس المباشرة ، ويمكن تعرضها لأشعة الشمس الخفيفة في فصل الشتاء .

*ملاحظة كلما كانت الاضاءة قوية كلما ازدادت الالوان على الورقة وطغت على اللون الاخضر ، لاحظ أن أوراق النبتة تميل للون الأخضر إذا ربي النبات في الظل بينما تتعدد الألوان عند تعريضه للشمس .

التشذيب والتقليم : يستحسن قص الأطراف النامية للنباتات الصغيرة في السن لتحفيز نمو أفرع جديدة فتبدو النبتة مكتنزه ، وكلما قلمت كلما زادت الأفرع .

الأماكن المناسبة لزراعتها : جوانب الطرق تحت الأشجار ، النوافذ ، الحدائق العامة ، الحدائق المنزلية ، الشرفات .
